Purpose
The purpose of this Working Alone Policy is to ensure the safety and well-being of all employees and volunteers who may be required to work alone at RC United facilities or fields.
Scope
This policy applies to all employees and volunteers who perform duties without direct supervision or without other individuals present on site.
Definition
Working Alone means a worker working at a workplace who is the only worker of the employer at that workplace, in circumstances where assistance is not readily available to the worker in the event of injury, ill health or emergency.
Policy Requirements
- Supervisor Notification:
- Any individual working alone must inform their supervisor before beginning their shift or task, including location, expected duration, and nature of work.
- Check-In Schedule:
- The employee and supervisor must agree on a check-in frequency appropriate to the task and risk level. Higher risk activities require shorter time intervals between communications with the contact person.
- Failure to Check In:
- If an employee misses a scheduled check-in, the supervisor must attempt immediate contact and follow the club’s escalation procedure.
- Hazard Awareness:
- Individuals working alone must assess their environment for potential risks and take reasonable precautions. It is strongly recommended that handling of hazardous substances or performing hazardous activities be prohibited when the worker is working alone. Work involving entry into confined spaces must never be conducted alone
- Emergency Preparedness:
- Employees must have access to a phone and know how to contact emergency services and club leadership. The name, address, location and telephone number of the workplace must be visible and available to all employees at each facility.
Responsibilities
- Employees/Volunteers:
- Follow this policy, communicate proactively, and report safety concerns.
- Supervisors:
- Establish check-in expectations, maintain communication, and respond promptly to missed check-ins.
- Club Leadership:
- Ensure this policy is communicated, maintained, and reviewed annually.
